Posidonia
The best kept secret of Ibiza
If you’re one of those thousands of people who are fascinated each year by the colour of the waters of Ibiza and Formentera, read this post.
When you visit the incredible beaches and coves of the Pitiusas islands, the first thing you hear is probably WOW! It’s impossible not to be struck by the almost unreal blue of the sea, ranging from turquoise to emerald blue that surrounds both islands but … do you know why that happens?
Yes, that wonderful colour has a reason, no more and no less than an aquatic plant, the Posidonia. Only found in the Mediterranean Sea, it makes a natural protective barrier at the coastline against erosion and produces oxygen and essential nutrients to aquatic life.
Between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera there is an underwater meadow where one of its Posidonia plants is about 8 km long and around 100,000 years old!
With this in mind, Posidonia has been proclaimed one of the largest and longest living organisms of the plant realm and the prairies of Posidonia of Salines Park have been declared World Heritage Site by the Unesco.
More than enough reasons to treat all the beaches, coves and waters of our beloved islands with tender care.
Now that you know where their colour comes from, from azuLine Hotels we have prepared a small selection of the best places to find their different shades both in Ibiza and Formentera.
The most crystalline blue, Ses Illetes beach, Formentera.
This beach at the north of the island, close to Es Palmador, can boast of having such clear waters that you will not need goggles to observe the fish and the seabed. And you can also practice all kinds of water sports like windsurfing, water skiing, etc.
Aqua blue, Es Cavallet, Ibiza.
The beach of Es Cavallet is within the park of Ses Salines and was one of the first nudist beaches officially declared in Ibiza. Today it is one of the most famous and popular in the gay community, with several beach bars where you can enjoy the best music all day.
More intense blue, Es Canar, Ibiza.
