How Christmas is celebrated in Ibiza and Mallorca

Ibiza and Mallorca, are two islands that make you fall in love without a doubt, and not only for their landscapes, but also for their traditions, one of the most beautiful things they have.

Throughout history, both Ibizan and Mallorcan  have managed to preserve many traditions, like the ones that take place at Christmas. In Spain many traditions are celebrated, but we are going to tell you how Christmas is celebrated in Ibiza and Mallorca.

In both places can not miss family and friends get-togethers, as well as filling the table with the most typical dishes for everyone to taste. The most popular are the salsa de nadal accompanied by the bescuit, the bullit de nadal and the roscón de reyes.

What takes place in Ibiza for Christmas

Ibiza is very musical, so at this time of the year there is no shortage of concerts, children’s choirs and Christmas carols on the streets. Every year the symphonic band Ciudad de Ibiza delights the public with a traditional Christmas concert.

All the municipalities of the island organise activities at this time for all audiences and tastes, like Christmas markets, sports activities, concerts, workshops, storytelling, theaters …

Every year they publish their Christmas programmes with the schedules of tons of activities. So pay attention, if you spend Christmas in Ibiza, to not miss out on anything.

The most outstanding children’s activity is the cabalgata de reyes (kings cavalcade), their majesties appear on a boat and make a tour of the whole city distributing candy to the little ones, who live that night with maximum enthusiasm.

One of our favorite plans is to walk along the different markets, where you can breathe that special Christmas ambience and where you can enjoy the work of the artisans of the island.

What you must not miss of Christmas in Mallorca

  1. Christmas markets. In various points of Palma de Mallorca you can find markets with typical crafts of the island, gastronomic products, gift and decorative items and traditional pastries made in the convents and monasteries of the island.
  2. Birth and nativity scenes. There are several churches that mount their nativity each year. A very traditional Christmas plan can be to see all these nativity scenes on display while you walk through the city.
  3. The singing of the Sibil·la. The night of Christmas Eve, the traditional mass of the cock is celebrated, in Mallorca it is accompanied with this song documented from the 10th century.
  4. San Silvestre. As in other places in Spain, the popular race of San Silvestre is celebrated, where athletes say goodbye to the year before New Year’s Eve dinner and the grapes.
  5. Kings Cavalcade. On January 5, as in every town in Spain, the Kings cavalcade is celebrated. In Palma they say that one of the most magical celebrations has been celebrated for 200 years. Their Majesties the kings arrive by sea in a vintage boat full of gifts for the little ones of the island.

We wish you enjoy Christmas wherever you are!
