Hippy Market Punta Arabi and its #behappybehippy message.
Wednesday’s plan in Ibiza
Every Wednesday we have a date with the oldest and most authentic Hippy Market of the Island, which, this year, celebrates 43 years of history with its #behappybehippy message.
The beauty of Ibiza with its magical and secret corners and the gentleness of the locals, captivated the hippies back in the sixties and they decided to settle in the island, still unknown to mass tourism.
The origins of Hippy Market Punta Arabí date back to 1973 when the management of our Hotel Club Punta Arabí offered hippies the possibility of selling their crafts and products brought from faraway places to the few guests the hotel had at that time.
In the beginning, the market had only five, very special, stalls, the first of the now over 500 that make it the largest Hippy Market of the island:
Maggie with her delicious pastries, to sweeten the hearts.
A lady from Formentera selling hand-knitted sweaters made with her own sheep’s wool.
A young boy selling puppies, so that no one would feel alone.
Children who exchanged toys to renovate their fantasies.
Another person selling much travelled jewellery from India.
Back then, the hippies set their stalls on the ground, under the trees, showing their products on cloths. Guitars, violins and jam sessions enlivened those days of love and peace.
Over the years the market has become a must for every single person visiting the island. Situated at Es Canar, between the beaches of Cala Martina and Es Canar, 3.5km from Santa Eulalia, 20km from Ibiza and 800m from Es Canar village centre.
Besides enjoying the variety of the stalls, there really is something for everybody, there are three areas not to be missed:
The street of Artisans, with hand crafted products “made in Ibiza” where you can see them at work.
The children’s area, where they can participate in artistic and recycling workshops, create their own hippy elements or get a fantasy face painting.
The tent – with live performances every Wednesday starting at 13.00 where musicians and groups from the island and around the world get together to make visitors dance and have a good time.
Are you going to miss it?
