Why Ibiza will surprise you in December
In winter the island of Ibiza colours itself with tranquility and authenticity in every corner; offering a more natural look and leaving behind the crowded beaches of summer, the high prices in restaurants and the long queues of the nightclubs.
For lovers of tranquility, Ibiza is a paradise for enjoyment during the winter season. There are many things you can do and enjoy during this season; especially during the month of December, coinciding with the Christmas holidays.
Food and beers in the sun
Before we continue telling you of several tempting plans during this month in Ibiza, you should know that this magical island has a privileged and very pleasant temperature during the day, with many sunny days in winter, making Ibiza a unique destination in Spain to enjoy meals on restaurant terraces by the sea, as well as beers outdoors with friends at noon.
However, during winter nights, the temperature drops and the humidity rises. Therefore, if you are a daytime person who appreciates tranquility, without a doubt the best time of the year to come to Ibiza for you is from October to May; as long as your work and your circumstances allow it.
Discover beaches and secluded coves
The good weather is very often a midday companion during the winters of Ibiza, so it is a joy to walk around the coves and beaches with the feeling that you are surrounded by beautiful deserted virgin beaches.
See the sunsets
The sunsets of Ibiza are beautiful in summer, however, the Ibizan knows that the best time of year to experience the sunset is winter. The air is cleaner from the particles in suspension, especially if in previous days it has rained. In addition, the range of colors that can be observed in the sky and the sea during a sunset is much wider in the winter. Only on these winter days, when the sky is clearer, can you make out on the horizon the island of Mallorca or even the Iberian Peninsula.
Visit its villages at Christmas time
The charm of the Ibizan villages with their bougainvillea and typical white houses multiplies in the month of December with their Christmas decorations and lights. Recommended places to partake of hierbas ibicencas (alcoholic drink) such as the Bar Anita in the town of San Carlos, are coloured with Christmas spirit.
Another special place to take a Christmas walk is the village of Santa Gertrudis, where the special rural atmosphere of its streets and restaurants with their fireplaces and chimneys, will make you feel right at home.
Know their markets
In Ibiza you will find authentic flea-markets during the winter; like the one in Sant Jordi near Ibiza Town, where they sell mainly second-hand goods; or the market of Cala Llenya, in the Santa Eulalia municipality, where you will find articles of all kinds and live music too.
Also on Sundays, you can continue enjoying during December, the San Juan market in the north of the island; one of the most authentic, next to the oldest of the island, the Hippie market of Punta Arabí, which is held from April to November.
In addition, December is a very special time for night markets. The Christmas market in the Vara de Rey begins (the main square of Ibiza) just at the doors of its historic emblematic old town and the walled city of Dalt Vila. Dalt Vila is declared Patrimony of Humanity for its antiquity, December being the best time for a visit to discover its high walls, due to the lighting of the streets at night and the good temperature of the days, because during the summer it is too hot to climb to the cathedral and discover its different walls and observation points with views of the sea and Formentera.
Participate in their cultural and sports activities
Ibiza is a multicultural island and also multi adventurous. The winter season is perfect for sports, from hiking trails, cycling races to golf. In the month of December, the island of Ibiza has golf tournaments such as the Cáritas Charity Tournament by azuLinehotels, which will be held on December 16th at the beautiful 18-hole golf course of Golf Ibiza.
During the month of December, the Christmas holidays being the reason, the island of Ibiza fills its agenda with cultural activities, from concerts of local bands and musicians to plays, workshops and exhibitions. If you come to Ibiza in December, visit the tourist spots and find out everything so you do not miss anything.
